Finally someone who agree that JOHN could play!
« on: April 04, 2017, 05:34:32 PM »
This is a pretty cool article.  It's called: So You Think You Know John Denver?
Love how the first thing they say is:
John Denver could play hellacious guitar.

Today, it's easy to forget about this side of Denver. You won't hear it on endlessly recycled studio mega-hits like Annie's Song, swaddled in the cheesy overproduction typical of the era's corporate soft rock.

But he had a broader musical palette, and much more going on as a songwriter and artist, than stuff like that represents.
History is an ongoing process of revising what we think we know. Today, many remember John Denver, if they think about him at all, as a soft-rock schlockmeister. So it's time to flip the script. Below are twelve tracks that capture Denver from some unaccustomed angles—and argue that his memory and art deserve better.

Great reporting E, glad you had the time to find this, I'm JEA!

One thing that was said was John was against the NRA.
I'm not sure this is true. John was a gun owner in his youth.
Growing up in a farmers family, you learn to shoot a gun.
In John's book, he mention's that he had a shot gun and shells in the trunk of his 1964½ Ford Mustang.
He was told he was a suspect in a bank robbery. He was cleared later that day.

And yeah, I already knew he could play the guitar!
Just learning how how to play the intro to 'Rhymes and Reason' was enough for me to think 'Yeah, this guy really knows how to play the guitar!"
It took me many months of my teenage life to learn just the intro.
Remember, there was only one way to learn this song except by trial and error or by JD himself.
Also, you would need a 12 string guitar to get 'that sound',hard to duplicate on a six string back then.

All this is true too!

I was not sure about his stance on guns and the NRA either. But it was in there.
I KNEW he could play too! My husband tried to learn his songs......and he did many, but more often than not, hubby would end up throwing his hands in the air and saying something like....."DANG! HOW DOES HE DO THAT?" ;D

Crosby was awesome too.... ♥

John and David Crosby were friends for a very short time in the 60's. They tried to form a group and if I understand it correctly, ego's got in the way. Crosby is arrogant and John didn't care for it. You can read about this in John's book. This is just about the time when John came to Fort Walton Beach, FL in 1964-65ish and when he went back to L.A.

I used to play a  few songs from CSN and Stephen Still's back in the day. It's hard to make 'Southern Cross' sound good as a solo artist but my band mates 'Yam' and 'Aha' and 'Isabella' (my Guild guitar)somehow made it sound good enough that people enjoyed it.

On another post, John had a gun under the seat of his 'porch' when he passed after his accident.
It was found by the authorities.

So yeah, John was a gun owner.

John owned a gun for self defense but he didn't like hunting.
He did enjoy fishing though.
We have talked about this before.
His son, Zack is a hunter though.

He was fishing for photos?

That's quite odd?

Where do you go "fishing" for photos?

In a 'photo' fishing pond or river? LOL!

I am listening to live solo concerts. Yes, John could really play the guitar. Who said he couldn't? It is sad when after 20 years we still get criticism of John. I don't like criticism.
The solo concerts were my favorites. I have some from 1984 and 1985 that I play every year on the date that the concert originally occurred and I am putting them on flashdrive to save and to share. Anyone interested in these can send me a flashdrive. Send me a PM on here with your address. I just require the flashdrive and postage for sending it back. It is usually under $3.
List of concerts include so far:
Wings Kalamazoo June 1, 1984
Blossom Music Theatre, Ohio June 2, 1984
Pine Knob Music Theatre, MI June 8, 9, 1984 with band no solo
Toledo, Ohio June 11, 1985 which is the concert where I took the praying photo that is out there all over.
Saginaw, MI June 12, 1985
Lansing, MI June 13, 1985
Meadowbrook, MI June 14, 1985

Listen to his stunning flatpicking guitar break in 1991 "Homegrown Tomatoes" you'll find that he's a hell of a guitar player, yes
