Rhymes ans Reasons vs Wedding Song
« on: September 18, 2017, 10:30:26 AM »
I'm not sure where this should be discussed but I decided to put it here.
For years, I have wondered how much if any of the inspiration for Noel Paul Stukey's "Wedding Song",
came from John's song "Rhymes and Reasons".

Have any of you noticed how much these two songs sound alike?

John wrote his song sometime before it was recorded in 1969.
Wedding song was first recorded in 1971, so it would make sense to me that John's song was written first.
I can't prove this though.

Just something to think about.

Noel Paul Stookey's guitar work in the wedding song very much was inspired by Johns work....

I had never considered this and needed a refresher.

I love The Wedding Song by Noel Paul Stookey.   Wonderful version here:

And Rhymes and Reasons by John in 1982:

Both are played on twelve string guitars and the melodies have similarities, while the lyrical messages are different.

Interesting question Dale! Better post on mudcat.org or acoustic guitar forums, like that, for answers to such questions and they'll probably give proper answers.

I noticed the similarity many years ago when I heard a German cover version of "The Wedding Song", thinkin it was a cover of "Rhymes & Reasons". I also believe that John's song was earlier, but of course, you never know.

I have looked at this question several times and I have resisted to answer for several reasons I won't post here.

I don't 'see' any similarities in these songs except one is a 'love' song and is used in wedding ceremonies while the other is not. One might compare it to "Annies Song" for wedding ceremonies but that's it. IMHO.

My take of R&R is it is a statement of our society. I don't see this as a 'love song'.

As far as who wrote which song first, JD wrote R&R first with no doubt.

John wrote this song in the shower, although I don't know how he kept the ink from running and the pages of the notebook dry! Te he!

Just read about the story about 'Wedding Song' in which this song came to fruition by Noel Paul Stookey in the video.(scroll down)

BTW, Noel Paul Stookey did not play a 12 string guitar for this song, he played a 'Lute'

A totally different instrument!
